A tribute to Red Miley - Friday, June 29, 2007
James J. “Red” Miley became a member of the Carnegie Rotary Club in July 1976 when Rotarian Max Applebaum brought the young Carnegie businessman to his first Rotary Club meeting. At age 19, Red became the youngest Rotarian ever to join the Carnegie Club. Red found that the four-way-test fit perfectly into his personal code of ethics and committed himself to the weekly meetings, which he always referred to as his “breath of fresh air” in his hectic weekly schedule. He took on job after job that the Club asked him to do, and in 1996-97 he served as secretary, followed by a year as vice president and finally served the Club as president in 1998-99. Red was awarded the Club’s Rotarian of the Year award in 1999-2000, and in February, 2003, on our Club’s 79th anniversary, he received
Rotary Internationals most prestigious Service Above Self Award. Quoting the application, the nominee “must have demonstrated exemplary humanitarian service, in any form and at any level, with an emphasis on personal volunteer efforts and active involvement in helping others through Rotary. Service rendered by nominee through Rotary must have been on a continuing basis.” Rotary District Governor Kathy Crawford sent in Red’s application and he was one of only 100 such awards given that year.
We routinely tapped Red’s love of Rotary by asking him to induct our new members into the Club because no one could articulate what Rotary meant better than he could. Red was also committed to Rotary International as well as our Club. In RI, when one donates $1,000 to the Rotary International Foundation, you are recognized for your support by being named a Paul Harris Fellow. Red not only became a Paul Harris Fellow he also honored Ruth by making her a Paul Harris Fellow. And his generosity didn’t end there. Red continued to support the RI Foundation and with each additional donation became a Paul Harris Plus member.
He sets the example for our Club by being a Paul Harris Plus 5.
