Sometime in the last six months, I read from some book a line or a quotation that ran like this: “Be ashamed to die if you have not scored some victory in some way for mankind.” I am unable to recall the author or the book I read it from, hence I cannot make an attribution. But, it is challenging and profound in one way. At the same time, it is very appropriate to all Rotarians worldwide because of our campaign to eradicate Polio from the face of the earth. Recent updates show that we are almost there. There are now only four countries where there are still sites or endemic areas where Polio virus still exists: that is NIPA (Nigeria, India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan).
Mind you, these are the only four countries where our victory for mankind is holding us at bay. PolioPlus Partners is doing all it can to meet the last remaining challenge. To meet the challenge, PPP is in need of $597,082.82.
The Rotary Foundation has made a call to all the Rotary Districts worldwide to donate some unused District Designated Funds on a one-to-one match. Our District had responded to that this year. At the previous Zone Institute, we had responded with a size able donation, thanks to the generosity of Paul Elder. In fact, past RI President Devlyn joked if our donation then was in pesos because of the size of our District pledge.
To really make you feel that you score a victory for mankind is to call on all Rotarians who joined after our campaign in late 1980, those who have so far not donated to the Polio campaign, to do so this time.
This is an invitation to join in the upcoming victory celebration when Polio is finally eliminated in those four NIPA countries. Your $100 donation, or whatever is comfortable with you, will be much appreciated by the Rotary District Foundation. Our Foundation seminar this coming November will be a sort of recap in celebration of our participation of this coming victory.
Remember: “Every Rotarian Every Year.”. Step up to the plate and support the Foundation in its many efforts for mankind. To our annual supporters, thank you for your generosity. Again, for those of you who have not participated in the Polio Eradication Campaign, this is the last call. Be on board when we celebrate our victory for mankind.
