| Partial Set of 2008 District Conference Photos Now Online - Monday, June 09, 2008
|
|
| Thanks for a Great Year - Monday, June 02, 2008The district conference is now history and I don’t think that Bedford Spring Resort will be the same. From the educational seminars, to the ladies high tea, in period costume I might add, to the men’s cigar smoker at the outdoor fire pit, to the golf outing, to the previous Ambassadorial scholar’s speeches, to Bill Mulkey, our RI rep to the hospitality suites, to the overall wonderful venue, we had a good time. We laughed, we learned, we sang, some good some not so good, but all sincere. We had tears in our eyes hearing about some of the things that Rotary does, but most importantly we shared some truly wonderful Rotary camaraderie. My special thanks again to Jay Jay and all of her committee who worked so hard to make your district conference a special event. To those of you who were unable to make it we have downloaded tons of photos on the district website-www.rotarydistrict 7300.org.
The district conference was a celebration of the clubs. There were 38 of our 49 clubs represented. For several of the educational seminars we had standing room only. I especially want to thank each of the club presidents for dedicating a year of their time to help lead their clubs this year. The job of the club president is not always an easy one, but it can truly be a very, very rewarding one. At the start of the district conference you, the clubs, had already exceeded our annual giving goal for the Rotary International Foundation and there are still clubs that will be meeting their annual pledge goal between now and June 30. Please don’t forget to do so. I don’t have all of the final membership numbers in yet from RI, but I am pretty sure that the district membership numbers will finish slightly up for the year. This reverses a trend in our district for the last 6 years or more. Your hard work and dedication to adding new members and retaining our current members has begun to pay off. We can’t let up. Membership is the responsibility of each and everyone one of us and there’s one simple way to continue to grow—ASK!
This year you fed the hungry, here in our own communities and abroad. You’ve mentored those adults who struggle with reading and writing and you’ve given dictionaries to third graders to help promote overall education. You’ve chauffeured shut-ins, you’ve held parties and bingos at nursing homes, you’ve built shelters and you’ve given bicycles to kids who couldn’t afford them. You’ve supported the World Affairs Institute, the Rotary Gateway Leadership Institute and the Ethics symposium. You’ve welcomed our five wonderful youth exchange kids into your clubs and your homes-how much more we learn from these students than they learn from us? You’ve also welcomed our GSE team from Venezuela into your homes and your club and helped to spread peace and fellowship from the United States to an otherwise unfriendly country to ours. You have three ambassadorial scholars this year, thanks to your support of The Rotary Foundation. You’ve helped to provide clean drinking water to people that you’ll never see or know, but who now live longer and much healthier lives. You’ve helped to rid the world of Polio, either through your contributions or your direct participation in a National Immunizations Days campaign in a third world country. You’ve sold raffle tickets and pancakes and chili and chicken. All to raise the funds to make all of the above possible.
You’ve had a wonderful year and all of you have made my year one of the best of my life. Thanks you all for that and thanks again for all you do for Rotary.

| Venezuela's Oustanding Youth Musical Program - Monday, May 05, 2008Venezuela has a musical program that starts kids about 4 years old in a instructional progression to classical music. The kids are from the poorest of neighborhoods. This not only produces great talent, but keeps the kids occupied and out of trouble in their early years.
This is but one of the Orchestras and there are over 300,000 young people in this program. In their high school years they travel throughout the world performing concerts in classical music and Broadway shows.
In this clip, they perform from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story.

| New Club Report Requirement - Wednesday, December 12, 2007Beginning in 2008, USA and Puerto Rican Rotary clubs and districts with gross receipts of $25,000 or less will be required to file Form 990-N, an electronic e-Postcard report. This report is required annually starting 15 November 2008. Failure to meet the annual filing requirement for three consecutive years will result in revocation of the tax-exempt status of the club or district in question.
We would like to stress that this form is not required for submission until 2008. Clubs are being alerted so that adequate receipts may be kept throughout the course of the year. As of the date of this message, Form 990-N had not yet been posted on the US Treasury Web site. To learn more about this requirement, and to obtain the necessary e-Postcard report form once it's posted, go to www.irs.gov/eo or call the toll-free number: (877) 829-5500. Additional information regarding Rotary and US tax status is available at www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/info_paper_clubs_irs.pdf.
Please let the US clubs in your district know of these new IRS requirements. Thank you for your aid in distributing this important alert. As always, please let us know if we may be of any assistance.
Sincerely,

| Photos of the progress on the MAMA kitchen In San Jose del Negrito, Honduras-updated - Monday, December 03, 2007
This is the progress of the MAMA kitchen in San Jose, which is next to the Shoulder to Shoulder Pittsburgh clinic. The renovation of the building is funded by the Forest Hills Rotary Club. From this kitchen, children in San Jose will be provided milk and protein cookies that suppliment the primarily starch diet. Because of this diet, many of the children are malnurished, small for their age and more susceptable to disease. The picture below is of a 14 year old and a 10 year old, even though they look like they are under 10. This kitchen will go a long way in improving the health of the area, along with the Forest Hills Rotary Pure Water for All project
Attached are five photos;
The first shows the MAMA kitchen building before refurbishing..
The second shows the building before close in of wall
The third shows an indoor stove it its original condition
The fourth shows the stove half renovated
The last shows the heartened oven before renovation
The revovated kitchen is about 10% complete. They still have to enclose one side of the building and put on a new roof. They have to put in windows (to keep out the bugs). And they also have to
repair the outside earthen oven.
They have the equipment they need, but can always use more metal cookie sheets. This will speed up the baking of the protein suppliment cookies.
The kitchen will also serve as the dining hall for the staff (and volunteers) at the clinic, which is next door to the clinic.
This all should be completed in January. Bill Molyneaux (a board member of S2S) will go down to inpect and bring back photos of the finished product.

Families pay for the airfare and health insurance. Host families will provide room and meals (and treat them as a member of the family) The local Rotary Clubs will give them an allowance (we give $75 per month) and provide a counselor to help them with any problems that they might encounter. The rules are strict, but not overbearing (they cannot drive, must not partake alcohol or drugs, no travel unaccompanied outside the host District, no tattos, etc). Interested parties should let me know by end of September for 2008-2009 school year.

| Funds are still available for Biloxi volunteers. (Posted on - Tuesday, July 24, 2007District Governor Dennis has notified the club presidents that he will also be supporting the ongoing district Katrina project started three years ago. Yes we're Rotarians we do good things all the time, but can you say you know firsthand how much one person can mean to another persons quality of life. We give our money and we work hard when we put together events for the good of our neighborhoods, but when you show up in Biloxi and the people who have lost the very soul of their existence see how much you're willing to do for them. Someone you don't even know, they aren't going to forget what you have done. Guess what one of our future peacemakers may be living in one of those trailers right now. Or an RI President, or just someones grandchild. Please see if you can make the time to save someones future, you really will matter. read more ...

1) No matter how hard you try, you can't baptize cats.
2) When your Mom is mad at your Dad, don't let her brush your hair.
3) If your sister hits you, don't hit her back. They always catch the second person.
4) Never ask your 3-year old brother to hold a tomato.
5) You can't trust dogs to watch your food.
6) Don't sneeze when someone is cutting your hair.
7) Never hold a Dust-Buster and a cat at the same time.
8) You can't hide a piece of broccoli in a glass of milk.

| Biloxi Update - Wednesday, April 02, 2008Janet Elder of the Forest Hills Rotary Club led a team of young people (8 Americorp workers plus Hope Nunnally and Tim Lynch) to Biloxi to help finish up houses that were needed to be completed so the owners could move in.
The Biloxi effort under the direction of Bob Bolitho will end March 31. In the two and one half years since the Katrina storm , over 150 volunteers and over $100,000 in supplies have been provided by District 7300. Rotary, by far, has been the largest contributor to rebuilding homes of mostly aged people in the Biloxi area.
Dear Rotary,
Thank you for sponsoring the Pittsburgh Health Corps' service trip to Biloxi. It is amazing just how much work remains to be done even 2 ½ years after Katrina. Our group worked hard on the houses we were assigned to. We enjoyed meeting the homeowners and kept them in mind as we meticulously sanded and remudded the walls in hopes of giving them the perfect home. This trip was the best experience during my time with AmeriCorps---thank you for making it possible.
Sincerely,
Becky Hefel
Dear Rotarians:
I would like to personally thank each of you and your organization for giving the Pittsburgh Health Corps and me in particular the opportunity to travel to Mississippi. I had a truly amazing experience in Biloxi getting my hands dirty for a good cause. I want to share with you a conversation a cashier and I had with one another. While checking out, the cashier asked me where I was from and why I was down there. I explained to her our group's origin and our purpose for being there. She paused for a moment and then began to tear up. She proceeded to tell me how thankful she was that people like us were down there to help . & ;nbs p;She remarked, "It's people like you that put our government to shame." I never felt more honored in my life than in that moment. The thank you from her to me greatly extends to all of you because without your full support, none of this would have been possible and all the work we accomplished in Biloxi left undone.
Sincerely,
Ashley McAdams
